(Confirmation: Her husband was arrested during Kristallnacht in Nov 1938, taken to Buchenwald on Nov 11, and released Dec 12, 1938. They left Hamburg, Germany, for New York City on March 16, 1939, on the SS Deutschland.)

Erwin ... served in the U.S. Army, most of the time at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Leaving the service in 1945 with a master sergeant's rank, Erwin worked in a variety of jobs for a time, then in the 1950s established a business in wholesale jewelry with his sister's husband in Kansas City. Tea thought he "would have liked to have become a physician as he started, but by that time his brother-in-law was here and so they started this jewelry business together.Working from his home for the first five years, the husband of Erwin's sister started a wholesale jewelry business in August 1939. (Ledgers listing every sale during that time are at the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Kansas City.) Erwin helped in important ways in those early years, including translation and driving. In 1945 or 1946, the business moved to a downtown office in Kansas City and Erwin became a partner. The partnership was dissolved in the late 1950's.
